Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
I’ve grown up on farms my whole life, before I started work experience with CLAAS Harvest Centre whilst I was at still at school. I started work placement during VCAL and ended up getting a job out of it. And I’m still here today. Aside from work, I enjoy catching up with friends and family, jumping on the motorbike and going for a ride and four wheel driving basically every weekend.
When did you start working at CLAAS Harvest Centre?
I guess you could say I’ve been here four and a half years now (since 2013). I did one year as part of my placement and then three and a half years with my Apprenticeship.
What’s your role at CLAAS Harvest Centre?
Service Technician, I recently finished my apprenticeship becoming a fully qualified Diesel Mechanic.
What does a typical day involve?
Servicing, breakdowns, machine assemblies, helping out spare parts. There can be a variety of roles depending on the season.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
The variety, nothing is the same. It’s the nature of our business, we are always doing some different. I also love the onsite travelling, it’s great to get out and meet the farmers and contractors we have around Gippsland.
How did you get involved in the Apprenticeship Program? How long did it take?
It all began when my Dad bought a tractor off a previous Branch Manager of CLAAS Harvest Centre, Gippsland. Following the purchase, one day Dad mentioned to Alan that I was looking for a work placement and I was then fortunate that Alan gave me the opportunity to do one day a week on a placement, before going onto offer me an Apprenticeship. The Apprenticeship Program took three and a half years to complete.
What tips do you have for others thinking about the Apprenticeship Program?
You have got to want to do it, be passionate and eager to learn. You only get out what you put in. Have a go, it’s been an amazing opportunity for me.
What did you like most about the Apprenticeship Program?
The opportunities, there are so many trainings offered to apprentices. They are all very good quality as well.
What other training have you done since working with CLAAS Harvest Centre?
Stage 1 & 2 Tractors, CLAAS LEXION and Stage 1 & 2 Electrics & Hydraulics.
What advice do you have for others thinking about entering the Apprenticeship Program?
The same as the tips I gave above, just have a go and do it.
